How Muskoka Yoga Festival is providing therapy and healing through music this year
I’m sure you know, from your own experience that music can ‘heal.’ Allowing us to be present, set a mood, and leave our concerns behind. A big part of the benefits of music, from a yoga perspective, is the vibrations of sounds and their healing properties. Did you know that “Om” is known to be so sacred because it is also a ‘complete’ sound in sanskrit?
Many cultures and civilizations celebrate the benefits of music and now we have ways to ‘prove’ the benefits scientifically. The use of music therapy can be traced back to late 1700s and early 1800s, according to the American Music Therapy Association (and yes, there is an association for that). And, music is FUN!
“Music is a multi-sensory experience that invites a connection between mind and body.” – Maya Benattar, NYC creative arts therapist.
- Elevating mood
- Inducing a meditative state
- Ease pain
- Reduce Stress
- Improve cognitive performance
- …and much more.
So, of course, a big component of Muskoka Yoga Festival is music! In previous years we have had live music, sound baths and lots of ecstatic dance to move and listen away our worries!
This year, we are upping the anti! We have a dedicated Music Director, Alexandria, who is a DJ herself and Sound Bath healing expert, to help curate an amazing exp-EAR-ience.
A few exp-EAR-iences to be excited about for Muskoka Yoga Festival this year:
Muskoka Yoga Festival Friday Night Experience
Have you had a silent disco experience yet? Connected with others but with your own headphones? The DJ providing the beats, being there with the community, but allowing you to fully immerse inward? No chatting, just music and dancing. By yourself. Together. With connection and community being 2 of the 3 pillars of our festival, we loved the idea of adding something that provided this.
“Silent dance parties, or silent disco, have a reputation for being extremely liberating as they allow participants to connect with each other — and with themselves — in a way that’s entirely different” – De Elizabeth, Refinery29
Silent discos are not just for late night ravers who want to stay up way passed witching hour to ‘party’ (although a great added benefit), it has also been proven to help with anxiety, just like other forms of music therapy.
This year, we have added a Silent Disco to Friday Night of the Festival! And how cool will it be to be dancing under the stars!?
The Silent Disco will be provided by T.O.A.
Sound Bath Healing
Throughout the Muskoka Yoga Festival, including sound by by Darren Austin Hall and Alexandria
Sound Bath is a growing popular form of sound healing, and allows you to deepen into a meditative state. By ‘bathing’ in sounds, you will literally feel the sounds in your body.
You may have heard more of sound bath healing being associated with healing. Sound Bath healing is especially beneficial when we live in a city (hello Torontonians) as we have a lot of high frequencies of electrical pitches that irk our mind. These pitches are higher than what naturally exist in nature. These unnatural frequencies can wear on city dwellers, inflicting more stress. Sound bathing brings the frequency back to a ‘natural’ state by ‘bathing’ our ears in natural frequencies.
We asked Alexandria, our Music Director, to tell us a little bit more about sound healing:
“The healing sounds of the crystal singing bowls work with frequency and vibration. They are made from pure crystal quartz. The bowls T.O.A. most often uses are tuned to 432hrz. This frequency works directly with the physical body, the chakra system and with your cells to assist the body to relax, restore and replenish. You can expect to feel a deep sense of relaxation. You may experience emotional release, fall asleep or astral project – depending on where you are at and what you need – your experience is unique to you and will change every time!”
Like previous years, we will have lots of sound bathing healing throughout the whole weekend with some of the most respected and established sound healers! Darren Austin Hall and Alexandria, who were featured at Ted Talk, leading a Toronto Ted Talk attendees through sound bath, are both leading us through some sound healing throughout the weekend!
